Local SEO for clinics

How patients find a clinic through Google and Maps, and what a practice can do to appear when they search nearby.

6 min read · Reviewed October 2026

Most patients searching for a clinic are looking for a specific service near a specific place. Local search is built around that, and a practice does not need a large budget to do it well.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

This is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the local results box. Choose the most accurate primary category, add every service you offer, set correct hours (including holidays), add real photos of your clinic and team, and keep the phone number and address identical to your website.

2. Build one page per service

A page that is clearly about "physiotherapy for knee pain in Burnaby" has a better chance than a single page that lists everything. Each page should explain the service, who it helps, what a visit involves, and how to book. Write it for people, not for search engines.

3. Keep your details consistent

Your practice name, address and phone number should match everywhere: your website, Google, your college's directory and any health directories. Inconsistent details confuse both patients and search engines.

4. Use structured data

Schema markup tells search engines your business type, address, hours and practitioners in a machine-readable way. It supports, but does not replace, good content.

5. Reviews, handled carefully

Reviews influence both rankings and trust. Ask patients to review you, but do not offer incentives, and check your college's rules on how reviews may be used. When you reply, never confirm that someone is a patient or discuss their care. A reply like "Thank you for the feedback, please call our office" protects privacy.

6. Make the site fast and mobile friendly

Slow pages lose patients. Compress images, keep scripts light and test on a mid-range phone.

7. Earn local mentions

Local business associations, community sponsorships and professional directories can link to you. A few relevant, real links are worth more than many poor ones.

Measure what matters

Track calls, booking requests and direction requests from your Business Profile, not only rankings. They are closer to what a practice actually wants.
